CONGRATULATIONS! George wins through to Junior Eurovision with his song ‘Dance Floor’.

George Michaelides, a TLC Private School student will represent Cyprus in the 2016 Junior Eurovision Competition in Malta on November 20th. George who is a member of Young Stars Theatre and Performing Arts School in Kisonerga was selected from 9 entries. George’s success last Saturday (17th September 2016) follows his win in Sigma TV’s ‘Musical Kids’ competition last year.

Junior Eurovision is organised by the European Broadcasting Union.

Our whole school sends congratulations to George and wishes him success in Malta. We hope that after last year, when the country’s finances meant we had no entry, George can sing his way to victory in 2016. Two years ago Cyprus’s entry earned 9th place. As an excellent student we know that George will be giving it his all to make his country and his family very proud.

George is one of three students who were awarded scholarships at TLC Private School. They are obliged to commit to their studies but also attend all classes at Young Stars Theatre and Performing Arts School. The excellence that these young people bring to the school helps us to promote the performing arts. Our school’s success in performance is now well known around Paphos and indeed further afield. It is a belief of the Directors that young people develop confidence and self-awareness through performance and our commitment goes on show each year in an end of year talent show.

The 2016 Junior Eurovision Song Contest will see several format changes, following intense work by the EBU, the Contest’s Steering Group, and PBS as host broadcaster. This year the event will take place on the afternoon of Sunday 20 November and will be held across several locations around Valletta.

“Within the Steering Group we have been discussing how to improve and further the JESC format,” said Jon Ola Sand, Executive Supervisor for Junior Eurovision 2016. “Many members, including some not taking part, felt that the timeslot was not suited to children and family viewing, so we have tried to bring the competition to a time more fitting for this type of event.”

Sand added: “On behalf of the EBU, I am very excited that PBS has agreed to host the event again, and look forward to working with them after the benchmark that they set back in 2014.

PBS CEO Anton Attard, will again act as Executive Producer having taken the role in 2014. He said he was thrilled to organise the event again: “Within PBS we have tried to challenge every aspect of Junior Eurovision, based on our experience of hosting in 2014. We can again promise a high-quality production, together with some new additions to the format, as well as our Maltese hospitality to everyone who joins us in Malta this November.”
